Earthworm Farm – Little Acres Farm
The farm produces greenhouse tomatoes on a large scale. Being on sandy soils, they need significant amounts of compost/manure which they get from their chickens. They realized that they could make their own 100% organic vermicompost and earthworm tea using their reject tomatoes, plant leaves, chicken manure and other organic matter already found on the farm. GreenPula© converted their disused pigsties into an earthworm farm, trained the staff in vermiculture and supplied them with the initial numbers of Red Wrigglers to get the ball rolling. The end results are planting beds made fertile by reconstituting sandy loan soils, improved soil water retention, and reduced fertilizer and pesticide expense. All this is achieved using materials that were already sitting on the farm as waste.
Earthworm Tea – Oakwood Academy
The school wanted to plant lawn and landscape both sides of its palisade boundary fence. Their challenge was that the soil was a backfill constituting mostly of construction sand. The Landscaper, our sister company – sanwatrees.com applied GreenPula© earthworm tea to not only add nutrients to the soil, but also the much needed microbes, probiotics, and beneficial bacteria and fungi that the soil so desperately lacked. The advantage of the earthworm tea over vermicompost in this instance was that it dilutes at 1:5 with water, meaning its ideal for covering larger spaces such as lawns. In short, we took we took un-useable soil and turned it into a thriving home for their lush green lawn and garden plants.
