Vermiculture Training and Consulting

It is easy to collect chicken manure from the fowl run – no training needed there. Yet keeping healthy chicken layers does need good knowledge and training. Vermicomposting is like picking up the chicken manure, while vermiculture is the practice of keeping earthworms at their optimum production rate. At GreenPula© we only deal with the Red Wriggler (eisenia fetida) because it is the fastest and hardiest composting earthworm available in Zimbabwe, and dare I say, the world over.

What is My Benefit?
Vermicompost Zimbabwe

Without getting too technical at this stage, we emphasize ‘optimum production rate’ because they can produce for you, but you want them to do the following 3 things as fast as possible:

Eat: In ideal conditions a Red Wriggler corm can consume food equivalent to its own body weight every day. Earthworms do not have teeth so cannot chew food. This means you have to present food to them the way that they can consume it. Also, not all foods are equal. There are types that they rush for, some that they are lukewarm to, and others that will downright kill them. Consuming food has two separate stages, the first being taking it into their bodies, and the second being digesting it. Both can be optimized.

Poop: We would be proud, and not insulted, if you said that GreenPula©’s deliverables are a load of crap! Essentially it is the earthworm poop (castings) that we are all after. Logic dictates that the quicker they eat, the quicker they will produce castings for you. The castings are your vermicompost (BLACK GOLD) which you can also turn into earthworm tea.

Multiply: In the right conditions, a Red Wriggler earthworm can produce 4 cocoons (eggs) a month. These cocoons should take 2 weeks to hatch, while after hatchling it should take no more than 2 months for it to reach maturity and start producing 4 eggs a month. As if that is not amazing enough for the tough crowd, earthworms are hermaphrodites (have both boy and girl bits) so each of your worms will make you more babies. Let’s put that in numbers. A mature worm will give you 340 worms in 12 months. Imagine that kind of return if it was cash - $1000 would become $340 000 in a year! My math is not good enough to tell you how many those 340 would turn into in year 2.
